Think Tank SpeedTop Crossbody Series: Questionable or Genius?

Ever heard about magnetic lid camera bags? (I never had.) When I found out about the SpeedTop Crossbody Series, it made me wonder… Was it a very good idea or a very bad one? Here are my thoughts on the latest Think Tank collection.

The “SpeedTop” concept

This Series is named “SpeedTop” because it features an innovative magnetic lid. It allows for quick access by opening the lid with a single hand. Interesting fact: Because there’s no zipper or velcro, it’s totally silent when it opens and closes. The Series is offered in one colour (grey/black) and two sizes: “10” and “15″.

Here is a side by side comparison of what the SpeedTop Crossbody Series 10 and 15 look like on a “standard sized photographer”

My security concerns about the magnetic lid

I liked that magnetic top idea, but could it really work in real life? I saw the “security test” from the promo video so I decided to make one of my own. (If I had to put my gear in there, I better make sure it wasn’t about to fall on the floor.)

I placed two 19oz cans plus an extra 29oz one in the 10 bag, closed the lid, turned it upside down and shook as vigorously as I could. Despite all my best efforts, my scepticism went away as I realized that nothing was moving. Believe me, I workout and I’ve put in ALL MY ENERGY. (Head to my YouTube channel to see the experiment on the review video.)

What I’ve been able to fit in the “10”: One mirrorless camera body with two lenses (or one lens + 1 flash).

What I’ve been able to fit in the “15”: One mirrorless camera body with three lenses (or two lenses + 1 flash).

What fits in these bags

The “10” bag is claimed to fit a mirrorless camera body (without a grip) plus a standard size lens (like a 50mm, 85mm or 24-70mm) and a flash.

What I’ve been able to fit:

  • Sony a9 camera body
  • 85mm f/1.8 (already attached)
  • 28mm f/2

The “15” bag is claimed to fit a mirrorless camera body (without a grip) plus a larger size lens (like a 70-200mm), a second standard size lens and a flash.

What I’ve been able to fit:

  • Sony a9 camera body
  • 135mm f/1.8 (already attached)
  • 85mm f/1.8
  • 28mm f/2

As you would expect, both models offer pockets that fits all basic accessories like batteries, cables, memory cards and cellphone.

My top pick: The SpeedTop 15

My verdict : Is the SpeedTop Crossbody Series questionnable or genius?

The concept is working – and pretty well I have to admit! As promised, it’s easy to open the lid with a single hand while keeping my gear secure… Which, I’ll give them, is definitely genius.

Its smaller size is great for shoots when you don’t need/want to bring a lot of equipment (one camera body and 2-3 lenses max). If you’re looking for a different twist on the traditional photo backpack that offers a good bang for your buck, this Series might just be what you’re looking for.
