Take Your Seat!

A Canada Day Celebration with Randy VanDerStarren

  • 1,200 people

  • One incredible country

Welcome to our Take Your Seat, Canada exhibition at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto!

We had the honour of shooting throughout all of Canada to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary:

Every province and each territory were woven together by the Trans Canada Trail, our love of Nature, and our chair.
Canada Day and the City of Toronto gave us the entire square at City Hall to showcase the natural and diverse beauty of our country. Or hope was that in embracing that natural diversity in our photography, people would extend that embrace to each other. Canada is the envy of the world because of our varied geography but also our varied people.

Together, we are Canada.

Each landform, every race makes us who we are.

Twenty-four days of shooting, 15,000 kilometres of driving, a few flights in planes and a helicopter, produced 4000 photographs and enough wildlife to satisfy every adventurer’s imagination. The project left us speechless, yet with so much to talk about!

Thankfully, our photographs spoke on our behalf.

This Canada Day, our 151st, we wanted people to appreciate Canada even more after celebrating last year’s milestone. Appreciate they did. It was a hot but incredible human experience.

Hundreds of Filipinos, Dutch, Ecuadorians, Mexicans, Italians, Saudis, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and a few envious Americans, took their seat – the actual chair was there for anyone to snap a selfie. By the end of the day, we were exhausted and burnt, but elated at the same time.

My favourite photo? The one showing the VanDerStarrens, as the day and the adventure was an all-out family affair
