Storm Chasing

This month we have an incredible photo-story coming at you from an absolute legend: stormchasing photographer, Mike Olbinski. Here’s what Mike had to say about what it takes to shoot in the eye of the storm:

Storm chasing is such a wild adventure. Every year, I go into a new season with a blank slate. What will I see this year? Will I get anything awesome?

It’s all dependent on the storms, the forecasts, the decisions I make, and of course, on Mother Nature herself delivering the goods.

A double rainbow hangs over Ash Fork, Arizona, as a strong storm drops rain, hail and lightning over the the town.

My chase year begins generally in early May for supercells and tornadoes and then switches in late June to my home base of Arizona for monsoon season. That goes until late September.

Here are some of my favorite images this year, ranging from a tornado in Texas:

To a monster supercell and dust in Kansas:

And glorious lightning bolts down in Arizona:

It never fails that the blank slate ends up filled with scenes I’ve never witnessed before, and beauty that is only able to be captured with a camera and memories that will last a lifetime.

For over a decade now, Mike has been a professional photographer specializing in weddings, storm chasing, filmmaking, teaching, consulting and fine art imagery. That’s quite a line-up and we love seeing the work he creates! Check him out at mikeolbinski.com, Instagram and YouTube

It wouldn’t be Think Tank if we didn’t have some new gear in the works! We’ve got some exciting updates coming at you later this month, but we’ll just leave these right here for now…

Show us your trunk! After seeing Mike’s Think Tank trunk show, we also wanted to share this BTS shot from sports photographer Ralph Mawyer. Git er dun, Ralph!
