Ontario Council of Camera Clubs (formerly Greater Toronto CCC) has changed their annual “Capture Day” to “Capture Weekend” www.o3c.ca/capture
The weekend is full of education, keynote speakers, vendor and trade displays and so much more.
This year, we started Friday night with closed door access to Reptilia in Vaughan (https://reptilia.org/) They closed the facility to the public and had staff available to educate and inform. Attendees were able to test out Tamron lenses (including the 90mm Macro G2), Kenko Extension Tubes and Laowa macro lenses (including 15mm f/4, 60mm 2x, 100mm 2x, 25mm 2.5-5x Ultra Macro and the 24m f/14 Probe).

Participants could photograph various creatures in their habitats, including the Dwarf Caiman and many venomous snakes. It’s not just reptiles – they have a beautiful Grey Parrot who talks, too!

There was also a classroom setup where the handlers presented a 20-year-old scorpion and more reptiles. The highlight was a Pygmy Reticulated Python with gorgeous iridescent scales – who they fed a rat. I couldn’t get in for a photo, but you should see some pics popping up on your feeds soon.

Day 2 of Capture Weekend is all about education. From Liquid Art and Macro to Light Painting and Portraiture to tips on opening your mind to creativity, Day 2 had it all. Mairin Maguire (@mairinmodels) pulled double duty – helping Doug Hansgate in his session and then coming over to Johan Sorensen’s Fashion and Glamour Shoot session.

Mairin is a talented ballet model – I was able to highlight the action-freezing capability of the Scoro 3200 E by selecting a faster flash duration to freeze her in mid-air with no motion blur!

Capture Education is a great time for regular photographers to use professional broncolor lighting gear. Doug was one of the first to shoot with the new broncolor LED F160 continuous lights. Johan was using broncolor Scoro 3200 E WiFi, with two Pulso G heads. Light shapers were a para 88 and 30×100 softbox.

During the evening of Day 2, Johan led a special Portrait session “Edgy Lighting for Sensual Photography”. Models Starla Peterson and Dane Halo were photographed separately on two sets – Starla with the LED F160s in the para 88 main and L40 reflector kicker; Dane with a broncolor Beauty Dish and 30×100 softbox driven by the mighty Scoro.
Day 3 was a little more relaxed – a keynote and wonderful brunch at the Edward Village Hotel. The afternoon was the much-anticipated O3C Awards day. The big winners were Helene Ullock of Oshawa Camera Club as “Photographer of the Year” and Richmond Hill Camera Club (Harvey Rogers on hand to accept the award).

Keep an eye on the O3C website www.o3c.ca for slideshows of all the winners. There was some truly inspiring imagery created and displayed during the awards show. Photographers had a great time all weekend learning more about their craft and discovering some of the new gear available from Tamron, Vanguard, Kenko, Laowa, Hahnemühle, Cactus, Metz, Aurora, Yelangu, Cambee, Panasonic, Sony and Nikon.
