Discover how to enhance your subject using natural light! In this article, I’m giving you 3 tips for maximizing natural light in your images and taking your photography to the next level.

Back lighting (when the sun/window is behind your subject) is one of my personal favorite lighting.

1. Using the direction of natural light to enhance your subject

When it comes to natural light in photography, the direction of the light source can make a huge difference in the final result. Depending on the angle of the sun or the position of a window, you can use natural light to enhance your subject in different ways.

For example, if the sun is behind your subject, you can use it to create a beautiful halo effect or a rim light around their outline. If the sun is in front of your subject, you can use it to create a soft, diffused light that illuminates their face evenly.

Next time you’re shooting outdoors or near a window, take a moment to observe the direction of the light and think about how you can use it to enhance your subject.

Side lighting creates a beautiful dimension, illuminating the subject more on one side than the other.

2. Creating depth and dimension with natural light and shadows

One of the most effective ways to use natural light in your photography is to create depth and dimension in your images. By positioning your subject in relation to the light source, you can use shadows to add contrast and interest to your photos.

For example, if you’re shooting outdoors during the golden hour, try positioning your subject so that the light is coming from the side. This will create longer shadows and add depth to your image. Similarly, if you’re shooting indoors with a window as your light source, try positioning your subject at an angle to the window to create more interesting shadows.

The 45-degree angle casts shadows across the subject. It adds a lot of depth to a picture.

3. Finding the perfect angle: How to position your subject for the most flattering natural light

To find the perfect angle for your subject when using natural light, you need to consider the direction and quality of the light source. One of the best ways to position your subject is to place them at a 45-degree angle to the light source. This will create depth and dimension in your photo by casting shadows across the subject’s face and body.

You should also consider the height of the light source in relation to your subject. If the light is too high, it can create unflattering shadows under the subject’s eyes and nose. On the other hand, if the light is too low, it can create harsh shadows on the subject’s chin and neck.

Maximize natural light and elevate your photography

By maximizing natural light in your photos, you will be able to create stunning images that showcase your subject’s beauty and depth. So, next time you’re about to shoot, remember these 3 tips and take your photography to the next level!
