Laowa 9mm F/2.8 Zero-D Review

As our Amplis sales representative has done many times before, Ted handed me a lens with a comment of “You will like this!”

This little package did indeed make me smile. It was a small and beautifully made Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D lens even had my favourite mount – Fuji X!

With the last weekend of summer fast approaching, it was a good opportunity to fully test the lens – a.k.a. play with it. Specifically, does the lens handle sun flare and does it really have everything in focus from a couple of feet to infinity at a mid-range aperture?

Armed with these questions and the Laowa 9mm, I headed home to my ranch to shoot some pictures of my favourite subjects. Anyone that has seen any of my personal work for the last 40 plus years knows that the final result will probably be a square format, black and white image.

So what was my opinion at the end of the weekend?

The sun found its way into a bunch of my pictures, adding nicely to the atmosphere of the picture. I was happy to see the included metal lens hood as a large percentage of my images are backlit. Sun flare was well-controlled by the lens design and coatings.

I didn’t need auto focus as the lens did indeed hold focus over a crazy long range. The focus was smooth and felt great,

Yes, I’m happy to say this lens will be a perfect addition to my camera bag. The Laowa F/2.8mm Zero-D lens is available in Canon EF-M, DJI DL, Fuji X, Micro 4/3 and Sony E mounts.
