WILDLIFE PHOTOS FOR JANUARY, 2020

I got an unexpected Christmas surprise this year; the early release of my 62nd book and my 5th title with prestigious Johns Hopkins University Press. The book is Alligators – The Illustrated Guide to Their BiologyBehavior and Conservation.

Alligators

At the beginning of the project eight years ago I perused every book that had been written about alligators in the previous 50 years and searched multiple photo agencies to see what kind of images others had taken and published.  I wanted to know which aspects of alligator life had been repeatedly photographed and which had not. Not surprisingly, basking gators snoozing in the sunshine were common, but many other behaviors and photo angles had been rarely captured including: courtship, mating, hatchlings, predation, underwater images, and closeup photographs taken at ground level and water level with wide angle lenses.  That became my challenge, and what an adventure it was.
