For example, I live in the Quebec City area, and the surrounding towns and villages are filled with scenic sites… for avid photographers the Quebec winter is a visual delight that rivals any amusement park. I have enjoyed the opportunity to explore new places and discover many surprising facts about my home territory.

A few days ago, I discovered a great photographic location about 40 minutes from Quebec City. The Gorge de la Rivière Sainte-Anne is a 5.5 kilometer lightly travelled circular trail located near Saint-Alban, Quebec. This easy walking trail runs alongside a river and it is accessible year-round. In the summer, this is a popular area for rock climbing – in the winter it becomes a magical world of ice and snow – a perfect spot to use your creativity to capture the mysterious ambiance of an ice cave, where the perspective can be quite spectacular when you use the right lens.

For this series of images, I used my Nikon D6 with a 14-24mm wide angle zoom. There are many camera and lens combinations that would produce spectacular results – for example, Tamron offers a trio of great optics that would be ideal for locations like this, including the new 20mm f/2.8, the 35mm f/2.8 and the 17-28mm for Sony mount. For the DSLR camera, the 15-30mm f/2.8 is an ideal choice.

I used my ultra compact and lightweight Vanguard VEO-2 264AB tripod to provide stability for long exposures, shooting at apertures as small as f/22 at low ISO settings.

The ambient light within the ice cave is incredible… come with me as we venture into a fantasy world behind the ice.

Jaques, this is beautiful. Another beautiful location is Indian Falls, near Owen Sound, Ontario.

Jacques this is awesome. Did you go to the Rivière Jacques-Cartier in Pont Rouge at Pont Dery? There are nice ice formations pretty similar to what you exposed here. Be careful when walking on the river, make sure the ice is thick enough.
