In recent months, I’ve often shot in the studio for various fashion campaigns, so for my most recent personal editorial photoshoot, I wanted to change things up and do a more conceptual and theatrical session.
I decided to build a set in my studio using a large fabric canvas that I made by hand. I went to the fabric store and bought about 10 meters of yellow canva fabric, which I then sewed together to make a very large rectangular canvas.
The key element of this set was a round light that allowed me to make a backlight and add a geometric element to the decor. To do this, I cut out a 150cm circle from the yellow canvas. I then pinned the diffusion fabric from my Broncolor 150cm softbox to the back of the canvas, which would allow me to diffuse the light. Last in the diffusion circle is a Broncolor Siros 800s with its 150cm Broncolor softbox.
To fill the scene, I added a second Broncolor Siros 800s overhead passing through a 6×6 1 stop.
Finally, to create a cinematic atmosphere, I used a haze machine.
To create dimension and depth to the scene, I added 2 other lights.
The backlight is an Broncolor F160 LED with an L40 spotlight.
Opposite to the LED, this is a third Broncolor Siros 800s with a P70 projector and a medium grid.
These two lights were very useful, depending on the angle at which I was in the scene and in relation to the model. The lights caught the model very lightly, creating a very soft, subtle rim-light effect.
In the end, I was really happy with how all the pieces of the shoot came together.
