Canada’s top-rated tripods have undergone significant updates, offering improved quality, enhanced features and more compact, lightweight designs. Vanguard’s latest tripods provide photographers and videographers with versatile, durable options tailored to their specific needs. Recently, Vanguard Canada sent me three of their newest models to test: the Vesta GO 204CB, VEO 3+ 263CB, and VEO 5 264AV14.

One consistent feature across Vanguard tripods is that the aluminum and carbon fiber models are nearly identical in features and build quality, with the primary difference being the material and price. This is a refreshing approach compared to other brands, which often limit features on their aluminum tripods to push buyers towards more expensive carbon fiber models. While weight is a consideration when choosing carbon fiber, its main advantage is vibration absorption, making it ideal for photographers seeking stability.

Each of these tripods includes an Arca-Swiss compatible Quick Shoe, ensuring compatibility with L brackets and other Arca plates. The leg locks are easy-to-use twist locks and the legs can be adjusted to 20°, 50°, or 80°. All critical parts are CNC-machined metal, rather than plastic or die-cast components, resulting in enhanced durability. A hook on the bottom of the center column allows you to hang your camera bag for added stability.

Understanding Vanguard’s Tripod Naming System

Vanguard’s tripod names may seem complex, but they’re relatively straightforward once you understand the system. For instance, in VEO 3+ 263CB, the first part denotes the series:

  • Vesta GO tripods are designed for compact and mirrorless cameras.
  • VEO GO tripods are geared toward travel photography.
  • VEO 3+ tripods work well with larger mirrorless and smaller DSLR cameras.
  • VEO 5 tripods are heavy-duty options for large DSLRs, long telephoto lenses or video rigs.
  • ALTA PRO models are the largest and most robust tripods in the lineup.

The numbers following the series name indicate the leg diameter in millimeters, where a larger number corresponds to heavier, more stable legs. The “3” or “4” refers to the number of leg sections, and the letters “A” or “C” stand for Aluminum or Carbon Fiber, respectively. Lastly, the letters “B,” “P,” or “V” indicate whether the tripod includes a Ball Head, Pan Head or Video Head.

Vesta GO 204CB: A Compact Travel Companion

For photographers using lightweight mirrorless cameras, the Vesta GO 204CB is a perfect travel companion. I tested this tripod with my Nikon Z6, and it excelled in portability, folding down to just 15” while extending to a maximum height of 54.5”. The included deluxe carry bag is a thoughtful addition for travel.

One standout feature is the ability to convert the center column to a short column by unscrewing the top part, eliminating the need for an adapter. This allows the tripod to get as low as 8” from the ground, perfect for low-angle shots. Additionally, the tripod includes a handy cellphone holder that can attach to the Quick Shoe or stand independently. Weighing only 2.1 lbs (900 grams), the Vesta GO 204CB is light enough for all-day hikes without causing fatigue, and it easily supported my Z6 with a Laowa 12mm lens for landscape photography.

VEO 3+ 263CB: A Versatile Daily Workhorse

For daily use, I prefer a more robust tripod that can support my full-frame camera with a grip and heavy f/2.8 lenses. The VEO 3+ 263CB quickly became my go-to tripod for everyday shooting. With a leg diameter starting at 26mm, this model is incredibly stable, supporting up to 33 lbs (15kg). Available in both carbon fiber (4.7 lbs/2.13kg) and aluminum (5.4 lbs/2.45kg) versions, the tripod is equipped with a VEO BH-160 ball head for smooth operation. An dual-axis VEO BH-160S head is also available for more precise control.

One of the standout features of the VEO 3+ series is the Multi-Angle Center Column (MACC), which can be positioned at various angles from vertical to horizontal. This feature is invaluable for macro photography, product shots and low-level landscape images. The tripod also includes the VEO+ MA1 Multi-Mount Adaptor, allowing users to mount additional accessories or a second camera.

Another useful feature is the ability to convert one of the legs into a monopod, reducing the amount of gear needed on location. Spiked feet are included, which provide stability on slippery surfaces, and the padded carry case ensures protection during travel.

VEO 5 264AV14: Ideal for Videographers

For video work, the VEO 5 264AV14 tripod is an excellent choice. The aluminum legs, combined with the fluid-damped PV-14 video head, offer smooth panning and tilting, essential for capturing steady footage. Load capacity is 17.6 lbs/8 kg – more than enough for most video rigs. The spring-assisted head provides a consistent counterbalance, helping the camera return to horizontal automatically when released. This tripod is particularly useful for shooting with a spotting scope or binoculars, as its damped movement allows for easy tracking of moving subjects.

The VEO 5 tripod also includes spiked feet, which can be easily engaged by twisting the rubber feet. The detachable top section of the center column makes low-level shooting straightforward, without the need for extra adapters.

Conclusion: Superior Build, Excellent Value

Vanguard tripods continue to be a top choice for photographers seeking quality at a reasonable price. The updated Vesta and VEO tripods offer exceptional features and build quality, rivaling more expensive competitors. With in-house service and parts support from Canadian distributor Amplis Foto, you can be confident that your tripod will last for years to come.

For travel photographers, the Vesta GO series is an ideal choice. If you’re in need of a reliable and stable everyday tripod, the VEO 3+ is a feature-rich option. Videographers should seriously consider the VEO 5 series, where the fluid heads will elevate the quality of your footage.
